Gagner agrees to a one year deal with the Oilers but remains a question mark moving forward

It was no shock that the Edmonton Oilers and Sam Gagner came to a last minute agreement on a one year, $3.2 million deal on Friday morning. The signing kept both sides away from the dreaded arbitration process but it also confirms this organizations lack of confidence in the soon to be twenty-three year old centre, moving forward.

Peckham re-signing makes Potter a long shot to stick with the Oilers

Make no mistake, Theo Peckham wants to remain a member of the Edmonton Oilers and the organization would love nothing more than for the bruising defenceman to relocate his game from the 2010-2011 campaign. By agreeing to a one year contract, that will see him earn $1.075 million, it seems likely that he will get the opportunity to do just that. However, the signing of Peckham means the chances of fellow defenceman Corey Potter making the squad come 2012-2013, are highly unlikely.

Decision day is coming for the Oilers and Gagner

This coming Friday, Sam Gagner and the Edmonton Oilers are scheduled for what will be a crucial arbitration hearing for the future of the Oilers young centre. While the process is often something neither side typically enjoys being a part of, you can bet the Oilers will be doing their very best to rip his game to pieces, in hopes of getting the soon to be twenty-three year old under a manageable number. Though at the end of the day, it could be a number that they will ultimately not have to deal.
