When it comes to Montreal Canadien netminder Carey Price, that team is none other than the Edmonton Oilers. As odd as it may seem, the former Olympian has managed to beat Edmonton just once in seven career appearances.

Since 1981, the Edmonton Oilers have drafted a grand total two goaltenders who have gone on to see regular duty as an NHL starter. One happens to be a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Grant Fuhr and the other, ironically enough, is none other than Devan Dubnyk.

Bernier Would Solve A Lot Of Problems

For the vast majority of Edmonton Oiler fans, it was next to impossible to even think the tandem of Ben Scrivens and Viktor Fasth could have been anywhere near as horrible in 2014-15, as the duo of Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarbera proved to be during the opening weeks of the 2013-14 season.

For the players inside the Edmonton Oilers dressing room, that final buzzer could not have come soon enough. In a year in which many had pegged this team to at least show some marked improvement in the standings, they took yet another step backwards in putting together a simply disastrous 24-44-14 record.

One cannot help but wonder if there are days that Craig MacTavish sits around and ponders what might have been, had he only been willing to give up his first round selection at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. While the Edmonton Oilers used the seventh overall pick to snag themselves a blue-chip prospect in defenceman Darnell Nurse, it was that decision that ultimately kept this organization from acquiring former Vancouver Canucks netminder Cory Schneider. 

Hall Returns But Oilers Still Lose

Heading into their Sunday night tilt with the Arizona Coyotes at Rexall Place, the Edmonton Oilers were hoping they could celebrate the 100th game of Dallas Eakins’ National Hockey League coaching career with the team’s first win of the season against a Western Conference opponent. 

Addressing The Obvious

Despite coming out of the gate with a less than an impressive performance during the opening period of their game against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night at Rexall Place, the Edmonton Oilers were by far and away the better of the two teams.

With his fan base on the verge of once again pulling out their pitchforks and calling for heads to roll within the organization, Craig MacTavish is about to enter the toughest stretch he has yet to face since taking over as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers. 

Is either one really good enough?

While he did make a number of moves to try and rectify that situation during his first year as the captain of this ship, he has yet to fully address his netminding at the NHL level.

The Viktor Fasth Era begins

From the moment he took over as GM of the Edmonton Oilers, Craig MacTavish made it abundantly clear he wasn’t happy with his goaltending. After starting the 2013-14 campaign with Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarbera, the Oilers general manager decided to replace that duo with the trio of Ilya Bryzgalov, Ben Scrivens and most recently Viktor Fasth.

The Fasth/Scrivens Era begins

When it comes to fans of the Edmonton Oilers and the local media, many tend to have a very short memory when it comes to goaltenders who wear the Orange and Blue. While the masses appear content with Craig MacTavish’s new goaltending tandem of Viktor Fasth and Ben Scrivens, let’s not forget that it was just five short months ago that many of those same people were all in on Devan Dubnyk being the #1 guy moving forward.

Not so fast

At approximately 10 am on Monday morning, the Edmonton Oilers announced they had decided to take the first step in trying to shore up their netminding come next season. In agreeing to sign Ben Scrivens to a 2 year/$4.6 million deal, Craig MacTavish has secured the first piece of what will likely be a two part job.  In today’s NHL, the vast majority of teams run with your traditional setup in between the pipes. They have their starting goalie  and a second guy who comes in and holds the fort when the needs arises.
