Moroz will need time to develop

When the Edmonton Oilers decided to use their second round pick of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft on Edmonton Oil Kings forward Mitch Moroz, it left many an Oiler fan scratching their head. While no one should have been surprised to see the club take a chance on one of their so-called “homegrown” talents, the fact the organization used the thirty-second overall selection to grab the native of Calgary, Alberta is what confused so many.

Hate to say I told you so but after watching the Edmonton Oil Kings get by the Val-d’Or Foreurs in the fashion they did to reach the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup Final, you just got the sense this group of kids would not be denied.

To say the Edmonton Oil Kings have had a rather eventful week in reaching the 2014 Memorial Cup Final would be understatement. After opening the tournament with a disappointing 5-2 loss at the hands of the Guelph Storm, everyone inside their dressing knew reaching Sunday’s finale wasn’t going to be easy.

2014 Memorial Cup: Time for Jarry to step it up

In the grand scheme of things, the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 double OT loss to the Val d'Or Foreurs at the 2014 Memorial Cup may not turn out to be that big of a deal. If the Guelph Storm can manage to knock off the host London Knights in Wednesday’s round-robin finale, in what is truly a nothing game for the OHL Champs, than Edmonton’s inability to closeout Val d’Or was ultimately meaningless. 

2014 Memorial Cup: So far, So good

While the opening weekend of the 2014 Memorial Cup may not have gone exactly how the Edmonton Oil Kings had envisioned, head coach Derek Laxdal had to be more than satisfied with the resilience his players showed over their first two games of the tournament.

Game Seven: The Bounce Back

It almost seemed fitting that Game Seven of the Western Hockey League Final between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland Winterhawks would be decided at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. After all, it was the very building the original Oil Kings called home after relocating to Portland, Oregon following the 1975-76 WHL season. 

Game Six: The Collapse

In all honesty, could anyone have truly seen this one coming? After building a three goal cushion through two periods of play, the Edmonton Oil Kings were a mere twenty minutes away from clinching their second Western Hockey League crown in three years. Unfortunately for them and the 11,902 in attendance at Rexall Place for Game Six of the WHL Final, the Portland Winterhawks had no intention of rolling over and simply handing over their crown. 

Game Five: Oil Kings take it to another level

In what has seemingly felt like nothing more than a blink of an eye, the Edmonton Oil Kings have moved to within one win of earning their second Western Hockey League Championship in three years. After dropping the opening two games to the Portland Winterhawks and falling down 2-0 early in Game Three, it looked as though Edmonton had met their match in what has been somewhat of a surprising campaign from the now back-to-back-to-back Easter Conference champs.

Game Four: Back on level terms

Despite dropping the first two games of the 2014 Western Hockey League Final to the Portland Winterhawks, the Edmonton Oil Kings were confident the series would turn back in their favour upon returning home for Games Three and Four at Rexall Place. Now they may not have gone about it in the easiest of fashions, at the end of the day all that matters are wins and last night’s rather convincing 2-0 victory has pulled the Eastern Conference champs back on level terms.

Game Three: The Comeback!!!

It may not have been the way Derek Laxdal and his coaching staff envisioned it happening but at the end of the day that really doesn’t matter.The Edmonton Oil Kings come from behind 3-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks in Game Three of their WHL Final was not only a result the home side absolutely had to have but quite frankly, it could turn out to be the defining moment of this series.

Game Two: Winterhawks simply too good

After treating fans to pair of wonderful WHL Championship Finals in both 2012 and 2013, hockey fans across the Western Hockey League were hoping the Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland Winterhawks would make it three for in 2014. However, if the opening two games of this year’s matchup are any indication of what we should expect, it looks as though Edmonton could have their work cut out for them

Game One: Not nearly good enough

Heading into last night’s opener between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland Winterhawks, there were two things Derek Lexdal needed from his players in order to have any hope of knocking off the defending Western Hockey League Champions…top notch goaltending and a productive power play.

So here we are…just over a day and half away from a third consecutive Western Hockey League Final between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland Winterhawks. As good as both of these teams have been over the last handful of seasons, the chances of them squaring off in three consecutive WHL Championship series were minuscule at best.

On the strength of yet another dominating home ice performance and a pair of timely goals from Brett Pollock, the Edmonton Oil Kings clinched their third consecutive Western Hockey League Eastern Conference crown with a 4-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers.
